DEVELOPMENT VERSION: This is an experimental DALICC environment. Features, data and APIs may change or be reset without notice. A stable version of this service, with a potentially different feature set, will be made available soon at dalicc.net.

Changes to the license models

What DALICC changed in its curated models, when, and why.

A license model is corrected when a reading of the legal text turns out to be wrong. Every correction changes what the compatibility checker answers, so each change below names the reason behind it and links to the record it was made on.

3130 changes with the reason "Manual edit", page 7 of 63.

  • Open Data Commons Attribution License v1.0 version 2 2026-09-24

changed Permission: Derive, with the duties Attribution, Notice, Modification notice

was Permission: Derive, with the duties Attribution, Notice, Modification notice

Manual edit Its duty cc:Attribution quotes "Contains information from DATABASE NAME which is made available under the ODC Attribution License." Its duty cc:Notice quotes "Contains information from DATABASE NAME which is made available under the ODC Attribution License."

  • Open Data Commons Attribution License v1.0 version 2 2026-09-24

added Permission: Extract or reuse a substantial part of a database, with the duties Attribution, Notice

Manual edit Section 3.1 grants the rights "for the duration of any applicable copyright and Database Rights", and the licence defines Database Rights as the sui generis right of the Database Directive, so the permission is text-supported. The attribution and notice conditions of Section 4 apply to it as they apply to every use of the Database.

  • Open Data Commons Attribution License v1.0 version 2 2026-09-24

added Permission: Change license, with the duties Use a compliant license

Manual edit Permit relicensing on permissive licences; the notice clause is a duty, not a bar. Library convention 15: a licence that asks for no reciprocity and no source code asks only that the notice travels with the copy, which is a duty on the acts it governs and not a bar on putting the copy under other terms. dalicc:ChangeLicense is therefore a permission here, and the prohibition the record carried before is removed. The text reads: "Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, the Licensor grants to You a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, terminable (but only under Section 9) license to Use the Database for the duration of any applicable copyright and Database Rights." The permission carries the dalicc:compliantLicense duty, as Apache-2.0 does, because the notice has to survive the relicensing.

  • Open Data Commons Attribution License v1.0 version 2 2026-09-24

changed Permission: Change license, with the duties Use a compliant license

was Permission: Change license, with the duties Use a compliant license

Manual edit The statement is marked as a library convention, family rule 15: Permissive records permit relicensing: the text does not state it in as many words. Its duty dalicc:compliantLicense is marked as a library convention, family rule 15: Permissive records permit relicensing.

  • Open Data Commons Attribution License v1.0 version 2 2026-09-24

    changed Permission: Commercial use

    was Permission: Commercial use

Manual edit The statement now quotes the sentence of the licence text it rests on: "These rights explicitly include commercial use, and do not exclude any field of endeavour."

  • Open Data Commons Attribution License v1.0 version 2 2026-09-24

    added License: >

Manual edit Every record is published under CC BY 4.0. cc:license names the record DALICC keeps of that licence; dct:license now names it by the address Creative Commons publishes it at, so that a consumer matching the canonical IRI finds it.

  • ODC Public Domain Dedication and Licence (PDDL) version 2 2026-09-24

    removed Prohibition: Promote

Manual edit No sentence was quoted for the prohibition. The text only says "This Document does not cover any trade marks associated with the Database." (Section 2.2(c)), which is silence about endorsement, and the default rule of the core dependency graph covers silence.

  • ODC Public Domain Dedication and Licence (PDDL) version 2 2026-09-24

added Permission: Extract or reuse a substantial part of a database

Manual edit Section 3.3(a), the licence that applies where the dedication and waiver of Sections 3.1 and 3.2 do not, grants the rights "for the duration of any applicable copyright and Database Rights", and the licence defines Database Rights as the sui generis right of the Database Directive, so the permission is text-supported.

  • ODC Public Domain Dedication and Licence (PDDL) version 2 2026-09-24

    changed Permission: Change license

    was Permission: Change license

Manual edit The statement is marked as a library convention, family rule 15: Permissive records permit relicensing: the text does not state it in as many words.

  • ODC Public Domain Dedication and Licence (PDDL) version 2 2026-09-24

    added License: >

Manual edit Every record is published under CC BY 4.0. cc:license names the record DALICC keeps of that licence; dct:license now names it by the address Creative Commons publishes it at, so that a consumer matching the canonical IRI finds it.

  • ODC Public Domain Dedication and Licence (PDDL) version 2 2026-09-24

changed Warranty disclaimer: "The Work is provided by the Rightsholder “as is” and without any warranty of any kind, either express or implied, wheth...

was Warranty disclaimer: " The Work is provided by the Rightsholder “as is” and without any warranty of any kind, either express or implied, whet...

Manual edit Library convention 14: the warranty literal carried a padding space inside its quotation marks.

  • ODC Open Database License (ODbL) version 2 2026-09-24

    changed Prohibition: Sublicense

    was Prohibition: Sublicense

Manual edit The statement now quotes the sentence of the licence text it rests on: "You may not sublicense the Database."

  • ODC Open Database License (ODbL) version 2 2026-09-24

    changed Prohibition: Promote

    was Prohibition: Promote

Manual edit The statement now quotes the sentence of the licence text it rests on: "This License does not cover any trademarks associated with the Database."

  • ODC Open Database License (ODbL) version 2 2026-09-24

    removed Prohibition: Promote

Manual edit The sentence the prohibition rested on, "This License does not cover any trademarks associated with the Database.", is silence about endorsement, which the default rule of the core dependency graph covers.

  • ODC Open Database License (ODbL) version 2 2026-09-24

    removed Prohibition: Charge distribution fee

Manual edit The review's finding on family consistency: the record prohibited dalicc:chargeDistributionFee although the ODbL nowhere forbids charging for a copy. What it does is cap the price of the copy that has to accompany a Restricted Database and of the derivative database file, and those two sentences are now quoted instead; dct:source was missing.

  • ODC Open Database License (ODbL) version 2 2026-09-24

changed Permission: Modify, with the duties Attribution, Notice

was Permission: Modify, with the duties Attribution, Notice, Modification notice

Manual edit No sentence of the text asks for a notice of changes; the alteration file of Section 4.6(b) is an alternative way to give access to a Derivative Database.

  • ODC Open Database License (ODbL) version 2 2026-09-24

changed Permission: Derive, with the duties Attribution, Notice

was Permission: Derive, with the duties Attribution, Notice, Modification notice

Manual edit No sentence of the text asks for a notice of changes; the alteration file of Section 4.6(b) is an alternative way to give access to a Derivative Database.

  • ODC Open Database License (ODbL) version 2 2026-09-24

changed Publisher: "Open Data Commons (Open Knowledge Foundation)"

    was Publisher: "Socialtext Incorporated"

Manual edit The ODbL is published by Open Data Commons, a project of the Open Knowledge Foundation; the earlier value named the publisher of another licence.

  • ODC Open Database License (ODbL) version 2 2026-09-24

Manual edit The review's finding on family consistency: the record prohibited dalicc:chargeDistributionFee although the ODbL nowhere forbids charging for a copy. What it does is cap the price of the copy that has to accompany a Restricted Database and of the derivative database file, and those two sentences are now quoted instead; dct:source was missing.

  • Open Software License 3.0 version 2 2026-09-24

added Prohibition: Patent license ends on a patent claim

Manual edit The review's finding on family consistency and consolidation decision 4: the record permitted dalicc:noWarrantyNotice and prohibited dalicc:addStatement without support, made no patent statement although section 2 grants one and section 10 ends it on patent litigation, and said nothing about relicensing although clause 1(c) requires every copy to be 'licensed under this License', which the four new Open Software License records model as a dalicc:ChangeLicense prohibition.
